Acceptable Use Policy

1. Purpose
This Acceptable Use Policy ("AUP") sets out what is and is not permitted when using The Archiver ("Service"). This AUP supplements our Terms of Service and applies to all users.
2. Intended Use
The Archiver is designed for the digitisation, cataloguing, preservation, and research of archival materials. The Service is intended for use by:
- Professional archivists and records managers
- Cultural heritage institutions (museums, libraries, archives)
- Researchers and historians
- Individuals managing personal or family archives
- Organisations with records management needs
3. Permitted Content
You may upload and process:
- Historical documents, manuscripts, and correspondence
- Photographs and visual materials of archival value
- Audio and video recordings of historical or cultural significance
- Photographs of physical artefacts and objects
- Research materials and reference documents
- Any other materials for legitimate archival or records management purposes
4. Prohibited Content
You must not upload, store, or process:
- Illegal content — Material that is unlawful to possess or distribute under UK law
- Child sexual abuse material (CSAM) — Any such content will be reported to authorities immediately
- Malware — Viruses, ransomware, or other malicious software
- Pirated content — Copyrighted materials you do not have the right to digitise or store
- Content uploaded solely for bulk storage — The Service is not a general-purpose file hosting platform
5. Prohibited Conduct
You must not:
5.1. Security Violations
- Attempt to gain unauthorised access to other users' accounts or data
- Probe, scan, or test the vulnerability of the Service without authorisation
- Circumvent authentication or access controls
- Interfere with or disrupt the Service for other users
5.2. Abuse of AI Features
- Use AI Features to process content unrelated to archival purposes
- Submit deliberately misleading inputs to manipulate AI outputs
- Attempt to extract or reverse-engineer the underlying AI models
- Use AI Features to generate content that infringes third-party rights
- Excessively or programmatically call AI Features in a manner that degrades the Service for others
5.3. Data Misuse
- Use the Service to build datasets for AI training from others' archival materials
- Scrape or bulk-download content from the Service
- Share login credentials with unauthorised individuals
- Circumvent tier or usage limits
5.4. Legal and Ethical Violations
- Use the Service to facilitate harassment, discrimination, or hate
- Process personal data without a lawful basis
- Violate the privacy rights of living individuals without appropriate safeguards
6. Fair Use of Resources
6.1. Storage
Each subscription tier includes defined storage limits. You must stay within your tier's allowances.
6.2. AI Processing
AI Features consume computational resources. Reasonable use is expected within your tier's limits:

6.3. API and Automated Access
Automated access to the Service (scripts, bots, integrations) must:
- Respect rate limits
- Include appropriate authentication
- Not degrade Service performance for other users
7. Sensitive Archival Content
We recognise that archival materials may inherently contain:
- Personal data of living and deceased individuals
- Records relating to vulnerable populations
- Culturally sensitive or traumatic historical content
- Content that reflects the biases and language of its time
Such content is acceptable when uploaded for legitimate archival purposes with appropriate care. We encourage users to:
- Use the Service's sensitivity detection features
- Set appropriate access levels (public, restricted, closed)
- Add content warnings where appropriate
- Comply with their institution's access and sensitivity policies

9. Enforcement
We may take the following actions in response to AUP violations:
- Warning — For minor or first-time violations
- Content removal — Removal of specific offending content
- Feature restriction — Temporary suspension of specific features
- Account suspension — Temporary suspension of Account access
- Account termination — Permanent closure of Account
We will act proportionately and, where practicable, provide notice before taking action. Serious violations (illegal content, security threats) may result in immediate action without notice.
10. Changes
We may update this AUP from time to time. Material changes will be communicated via the Service or by email. Continued use after changes take effect constitutes acceptance.
